Caracole to Offer Free Admission to First 100 Ice Skaters in Honor
of World AIDS Day
The social services nonprofit is
promoting the free-admission offer to raise
greater awareness about HIV/AIDS in our community.
CINCINNATI, OH —
Caracole, the tri-state region’s HIV/AIDS service organization, is offering 100
people the chance to ice skate free of charge at Fountain Square in honor of
World AIDS Day on Dec. 1. Held annually since 1988, World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in
the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to remember
those who have died from an AIDS-related illness.
skate will take place on Sunday, December 1, starting at 1:00 PM at the UC
Health Ice Rink, presented by Fifth Third Bank. The first 100 skaters will be
able to enter the ice rink at Fountain Square free of charge, courtesy of Caracole
and a generous donor.
Around the world, about 37 million people are living with HIV. In the
United States, about 1 in 7 people who have HIV don’t know it and about 38,700
people get infected with HIV every year. That amounts to 244 new HIV infections
every year in our Hamilton County community alone.
Also, the Greater Cincinnati region is experiencing a public health
crisis in the form of the opioid epidemic, which threatens the gains made on
reducing HIV among people who use drugs.
“Stigma and discrimination are daily realities for people living with HIV.
It remains a huge barrier to HIV prevention, care and treatment,” says Linda
Seiter, Caracole Executive Director. “Our goal with the free skate is to inform the community about HIV, help stop
HIV stigma and work together to end the epidemic.”
Community support can help organizations like Caracole reach all affected
communities and help end new transmissions of HIV.
tickets for ice skating are available for $6 through the UC Health Ice Rink
ticket counter. Skate rentals are available for $4. The free ice skating
admission event coincides with the WinterMarket at Fountain Square, free photos with Santa at the Carew Tower and Caracole’s annual ChristmasTree Sale at Findlay Market.
